The Future of Two-Way Radio Has Arrived: Introducing the MOTOTRBO R5

At Day Wireless Systems, we’re excited to announce the arrival of Motorola’s newest addition to their professional digital portable radio lineup – the MOTOTRBO R5. As the successor to the trusted XPR3500e and XPR3300e radios, the R5 represents a significant leap forward in two-way radio technology, offering our customers enhanced capabilities, improved durability, and superior audio quality.

Building on Excellence
The XPR3000 series has served our customers faithfully for years, setting industry standards for reliability and performance. The new R5 takes everything users loved about the XPR3000 and elevates it to new heights. From the moment you pick up the R5, you’ll notice the difference – it’s lighter, more ergonomic, and built to withstand the demands of daily professional use. The R5 offers a Display & Limited Keypad (LKP) model (similar to the XPR3500e) as well as a non-display, No-Keypad (NKP) model (similar to the XPR3300e), and is offered in both VHF and UHF.

Enhanced Features and Capabilities
One of the most striking improvements in the R5 is its exceptional audio quality. The intelligent audio processing ensures the right speaker volume even in noisy environments, while advanced Ai-trained noise suppression technology filters out unwanted background sounds. With a maximum speaker volume of 106 phons, the R5 is about 9% louder than its predecessor. This means clearer, more reliable communications for our customers across all industries – from construction sites to manufacturing floors.

The R5’s enhanced battery life provides extended operation time (up to 32 hours), reducing the need for frequent charging and minimizing downtime. The new quick-charging capability means less time connected to power and more time in the field. Plus, the battery health monitoring feature helps users better manage their fleet’s power needs.

The R5 now features a dedicated orange emergency button. The bright orange button makes it easier and more intuitive for users to call for help.

We’re particularly impressed with the R5’s improved display. The larger, high-resolution screen offers better visibility in all lighting conditions, while the intuitive menu system makes accessing features and settings easier than ever. The programmable buttons can be customized to access frequently used features, streamlining operations for busy professionals.

Durability Meets Innovation
The R5 maintains Motorola’s reputation for rugged reliability while incorporating modern innovations. The radio meets military standards for durability (MIL-STD-810) and offers dust and water protection (IP67 rating). This means it can withstand submersion in water and continue performing in dusty, wet, or challenging environments.

Deep Dive: IP67 Rating
The IP67 rating is an Ingress Protection (IP) code that indicates how well an electronic device is protected against solids (like dust) and liquids (like water). It consists of two digits:

  • First digit (6): Protection against solid objects
    • “6” means complete protection against dust (dust-tight).
    • Second digit (7): Protection against liquids
    • “7” means the device can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes without damage.
  • What IP67 Means in Practical Terms:
    • Dust cannot enter the device, ensuring durability in dusty environments.
    • The device can survive accidental drops into water but is not designed for prolonged underwater use or high-pressure water jets.

Seamless Integration
For our customers currently using XPR3000 series radios, transitioning to the R5 is straightforward. The R5 is backwards compatible with existing MOTOTRBO systems such as analog/digital conventional, IP Site Connect, and Capacity Plus (single and multi-site), allowing for a phased upgrade approach. This compatibility means organizations can gradually transition their fleet while maintaining seamless communications between new and existing radios.

The R5 radios will have the same audio connector, so audio accessories for the XPR3000e series will be compatible. While the batteries will be different, the chargers (both single and multi-unit) will be compatible for XPR3000e series and R5 units.

Important Timing and Transition Information
The official dealer launch of the R5 is scheduled for January 31st, 2025. Day Wireless has made a substantial investment in pre-ordering these units, ensuring we’ll have inventory available as soon as Motorola begins shipping in mid-Q1.

For customers currently using the XPR3000e series, Motorola should be announcing the discontinuation of this model soon after the R5’s launch. Once announced, Motorola will provide a “last order date” for the XPR3000e series, and we’ll make sure to communicate these critical details to all our customers. Rest assured, Motorola’s policy ensures support for discontinued models – including repairs, parts, and firmware updates – for five years after the end date.

Planning Your Transition
Now is the ideal time to connect with a DWS consultant to discuss your organization’s transition strategy. We understand many of our customers maintain significant inventories of XPR3000e series radios, and we’re here to help develop both short-term and long-term solutions that align with your needs. This might include investing in additional XPR3000e units while they’re still available, gradually transitioning to the R5, or a combination of both approaches.
